How is the IELTS Overall Band calculated?

Your overall IELTS band score is calculated by adding your Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking scores and dividing the total by four.


The resulting average is then rounded to the nearest whole or half band according to IELTS scoring rules.

  • An average ending in .25 is rounded up to the next half band.
  • An average ending in .75 is rounded up to the next whole band.
  • Other averages are rounded to the nearest whole or half band.
